Tips For Conducting An Effective Fire Door Inspection

Pearl Welch

A fire door is an important line of defense against fire. It's important that you take the time to inspect your fire doors on a regular basis. Fire doors are made to assist people to escape fires quickly but can cause injuries during a fire if they are not functioning correctly.

The only way to avoid this is to make sure that you are consistently examining the fire doors in your building and dealing with any issues ahead of an emergency. Here's what you should be looking for when you do an inspection.

Certifications

Look for certification, this is probably best done before the fire door is installed. However, if you have just been assigned to inspect a particular fire door, one of the first things you should be on the lookout for is a certification mark.

A certification mark lets you know that the door has been examined by an authorized body. There are many buildings that still have old fire doors that may not have received certification. If the door is not certified, it must be removed and replaced with one that is certified.

Check the Hinges

You need to check the hinges on your fire door to make sure that they are working correctly. If you notice that the hinges are becoming loose, this needs to be fixed immediately. The last thing you want is a fire door that falls during an emergency. It might just fall on someone who's trying to escape and injure them.

Door Surround

Check to see if there are gaps in the surround of the door. If you're seeing light from around the edges of the door, it means that the door is not fitting snuggly in the door surround. This needs to be rectified immediately.

Remember that during a fire there will be a lot of smoke, and gaps surrounding the door will cause smoke to spread throughout the building a lot more quickly. This is why it is critical that there are no gaps around the door. You should also use the opportunity to check the closing mechanism of the door. Fire doors are designed to close without assistance. Make sure that the door is locking smoothly without any hitches.

Fire door inspection is critical to the safety of the occupants of a building. Make sure that yours is operating effectively. If you notice issues, call in a professional to get the door repaired or replaced immediately.
